Of myth and wonder

Today the function of the artist is to bring imagination to science and science to imagination, where they meet,
in the myth.

– Cyril Connolly

While I like this quote, and I love the imagery it conjures, I can’t help but have a knee jerk response. What of the scientist? Is it then, the job of the scientist to bring art into imagination? Or possibly to turn imagination into art?

Perhaps this quote only really holds for a true artist (who would be much the same as a true scientist, remember?). Or maybe Cyril Connolly’s quote is slightly off. Maybe it isn’t the role of the artist, so much as the role of art itself. Perhaps, as vibrant as each can be in and of itself, it’s only the union between the two that can bring about that added dimension. The depth. Both contain deep reaching concepts and ideas which can touch the darkest roots of our minds. Perhaps when combined the result is, in the truest sense of the word, awe.
