I’ve volunteered to give a talk!

There’s a skywatch event being part organised by our astronomy department next Saturday night, so I’ve agreed to go along and talk about astrobiology, as well as answering any questions people may have about the astrochemistry posters which are going to be on display.

I’m excited about it. Excited and perhaps a little nervous. I don’t have an awful lot of experience in public speaking, so it’ll be good to get some. 20 minutes is a good length of time for a talk too — though if anything, it might be tricky not to find too much to talk about!

About Invader Xan

Molecular astrophysicist, usually found writing frenziedly, staring at the sky, or drinking mojitos.

Wow, that sounds like something that will certainly be fun :D I love public outreach, because people get a chance to get a feeling for what astronomy is really about – and for how fascinating it is (well, I guess that also works for other subjects, where I enjoy being the one who is reached out to ^^”).
Though 20 Minutes is really not that much. Albeit just right from the visitor’s POV…

Yep. The general public. It’s been organised as an outreach activity — part of the IYA2009. And it’ll definitely be fun. :)

Yeah, it sounds a little intimidating at first — until you realise that you’re going to be standing in front of a load of people who all want to listen to what you’re going to say. Then it actually seems pretty cool. ;)

    Thank you! :D

  5. good luck! is this for the general public? it’ll be fun!

    Good luck. =D
I’d never speak though. I can hardly stand talking for a minute in front of loads of people, let alone 20 minutes. :O
