Breathtaking

This absolutely gorgeous sunspot image was captured and crafted by Mexican astronomer César Cantú. And… seriously just wow. I’m lost for words.

There’s just so much in this image that it’s difficult to know where to start. From the amazing detail in the surface granulation, with each of those granules being comparable in size to an entire continent here on Earth, to the spicules which can clearly be seen on the solar horizon. The leaping prominences of hot plasma caught in magnetic fields. And of course, the swirling material sculpted by the intense magnetic field lines surrounding that sunspot. Just stunning.

With a tip of the sun visor to Universe Today!
