Chlorine and water purification

Just one more thing…

Anyone who’s been camping will likely be familiar with the so-called “chlorine tablets” which can be used to purify water for drinking. Just so that we’re clear here, these tablets may contain a chemical compound which contains chlorine – but they do not contain any of the chlorine compounds which I mentioned in that last post.

Instead, things like puritabs contain this chemical. Sodium dichloroisocyanurate. Which purifies water by releasing tiny amounts of elemental chlorine into it. Which still isn’t particularly good for you.

(Personally, I always used to use iodine tablets instead…)
